Outdoor Rug Cleaning in San Diego
An outdoor rug hides how dirty it is until you lift a corner. Sand works down to the backing, moisture sits underneath against the hardscape, and pet accidents wick into the weave where a hose rinse never reaches.
We clean rugs flat on site, flush them through, and — just as importantly — dry both the rug and the surface underneath.

What this solves
Common problems we see
- Sand and grit trapped in the backing that grinds the fibers down
- Pet accidents and the ring stain that surfaces as the rug dries
- Mildew on the underside and a dark shadow left on the patio below
- Flattened, matted pile along the traffic path
- Salt and sunscreen residue near pool and spa areas
Scope
What's included
- Lift and inspection of the rug and the surface beneath it
- Dry grit extraction from both faces before wetting
- Pre-treatment of pet, tannin, and mildew staining
- Full flush and extraction across the rug
- Cleaning of the hardscape or decking underneath while the rug is up
- Flat drying with air movement, then re-placement with pile set
Our process
How the work is done
01
Lift and assess
We check backing condition, fiber type, and what the rug has been hiding underneath.
02
Dust out
Grit is removed from both faces dry — this is the step most rug cleaning skips.
03
Pre-treat
Targeted treatment on pet contamination, mildew, and organic staining.
04
Flush
The rug is washed through and extracted rather than surface-scrubbed.
05
Clean beneath
While the rug is up, we clean the patio or deck under it so the shadow does not come back.
06
Dry flat
Air movement and elevation until both faces are dry, then the rug goes back with the pile groomed.
In detail
What outdoor rug cleaning involves
Outdoor rugs are usually polypropylene or PET flatweaves that shed water but hold grit deep in the pile. Cleaning them properly means dry soil removal first, then hot-water extraction or a controlled wash, then a full dry — face and backing.
The backing is the part most people forget. A rug that feels dry on top can hold water underneath, and that is what causes both the musty smell and the dark shadow it leaves on the patio surface beneath it.
Rugs can be cleaned in place on suitable hardscape or lifted and cleaned on a clean work surface, depending on drainage and the surface underneath.
Materials & surfaces
What we work with
- Polypropylene and PET flatweave outdoor rugs
- Recycled plastic and reversible outdoor mats
- Indoor-outdoor synthetic pile rugs
- Jute, sisal, and natural-fiber rugs rated for covered outdoor use
- Rubber-backed and non-slip patio rugs
Honest expectations
Results and limitations
- Color and pattern definition return, especially on light rugs
- Odor removed rather than covered
- No damp shadow left on the surface underneath
What cleaning cannot fix
- Delaminating or crumbling rubber backing cannot be saved
- Natural-fiber rugs that have been soaked repeatedly may stay discolored
- Sun fading is permanent
- Very large or saturated rugs may need to dry overnight
Best for
Who this service suits

- Households with pets using a covered patio year round
- Anyone who has just discovered what is under the rug

San Diego conditions
What San Diego patios do to outdoor rugs
Because outdoor rugs stay out year-round here, they cycle through wet marine mornings and dry afternoons hundreds of times a year, trapping fine dust each time and cementing it into the weave.
What we see locally
- Marine-layer moisture wicks up through the backing and never fully dries in shaded areas
- A rug left in one position for a season leaves a permanent damp shadow and often mildew on the hardscape beneath
- Pool splash carries chlorine and salt into the pile, which crystallises and feels gritty underfoot
- Pollen and canyon dust bond into flatweave fibers faster than into indoor carpet
Maintenance
Keeping outdoor rugs usable
Airflow is the whole game with outdoor rugs.
Lift after heavy rain
Drape the rug over a railing so both the face and backing dry. This alone prevents most mildew.
Shake or vacuum monthly
Removing dry grit before it gets wet stops it from grinding into the fiber.
Rotate quarterly
Even the sun exposure so fading and wear stay uniform.
Use a rug pad
A ventilating pad keeps the backing off the hardscape and lets moisture escape.
Deep clean annually
Twice a year for rugs under a dining table or in a pet or pool zone.
Send photos of your space and we'll scope outdoor rug cleaning properly.
