Cushions
Outdoor Cushion Cleaning in San Diego
Our professional outdoor cushion cleaning service treats the fabric cover and the foam or fiber beneath it. We inspect the material, remove dry soil, pre-treat stains and, where the fabric, construction and care instructions allow, use controlled hot-water extraction to lift sunscreen, body oil, spills, mildew residue and odors.
Patio cushions need more than a surface wipe when soil or odor has reached the fill. We match the cleaning method to the fabric and condition, then plan drying so moisture does not remain trapped in the core.

What this solves
Common problems we see
- Gray or yellow body-oil shadows where people actually sit
- Musty smell that returns whenever the cushion gets damp
- Black speckling and mildew bloom on shaded or north-facing seating
- Bird droppings and jacaranda or bougainvillea staining
- Cushions that feel damp days after a marine layer morning
Scope
What's included
- Pre-inspection for colorfastness and seam condition
- Dry soil and debris removal from covers, piping, and zippers
- Pre-treatment of oil, mildew, and organic staining
- Hot-water extraction through cover and fill where the fabric, fill and care instructions allow
- Odor treatment suited to the fabric, rather than fragrance masking
- Controlled drying, with covers re-fitted square on the foam
Our process
How the work is done
01
Sort and test
Cushions are grouped by fabric type and tested in an inconspicuous spot before anything is applied.
02
Dry pass
Vacuum and brush to remove sand, pollen, and hair, which otherwise turn to mud during extraction.
03
Pre-treat
Targeted solutions on oil, mildew, and tannin staining with proper dwell time.
04
Extract
Where suitable for the fabric, construction and fill, hot-water extraction under controlled moisture. Delicate or non-removable pieces get a gentler method.
05
Neutralize
An odor treatment addresses what is left in the foam once the soil is gone.
06
Dry and re-set
Air movement and sun exposure until the core is dry, then covers are re-fitted and cushions placed.
Real work
Extraction pulls the soil out of the foam, not just the cover
Surface wiping only moves staining around. Hot-water extraction flushes sunscreen, body oils, mildew and organic residue from the fabric and the fill beneath it, then the cushion is dried properly before it goes back outside.
In detail
What deep cushion cleaning is — and why wiping never works
For many outdoor cushions, deep cleaning means extraction: hot water and cleaning solution are injected into the cover and fill, then vacuumed back out with the dissolved soil. Whether we extract, and how, depends on the fabric, cushion construction, fill, condition and the manufacturer care instructions.
Body oils, sunscreen, sweat, spilled drinks, and pool water all migrate into the foam or fiber core. Surface wiping cleans the top layer of the cover and pushes the rest deeper, which is why a cushion can look acceptable and still smell sour when someone sits on it.
Where suitable, we treat covers and cores as one system — pre-treat, extract, and dry with airflow to avoid trapping moisture in the core. Delicate fabrics or constructions get a gentler method.
Materials & surfaces
What we work with
- Solution-dyed acrylics such as Sunbrella and similar performance fabrics
- Olefin, polyester, and outdoor canvas
- Quick-dry reticulated foam and traditional foam cores
- Polyester fiber wrap and down-blend inserts
- Decorative outdoor throw pillows and bolsters
Honest expectations
Results and limitations
- Cushions feel dry and neutral rather than slightly greasy
- Mildew speckling and odor are often reduced substantially, depending on how far they have reached into the fabric and fill
- Color reads brighter, particularly on whites, creams, and pale greys
What cleaning cannot fix
- Mildew that has stained the fiber itself may leave faint shadowing
- Sun fading and dye loss are permanent and cannot be reversed by cleaning
- Deteriorated foam that crumbles on handling should be replaced, not cleaned
- Same-day full dry-down depends on weather; heavy marine layer days can push it to the following morning
Best for
Who this service suits
- Households with kids, dogs, or heavy sunscreen use
- Shaded courtyards and canyon-side homes where mildew starts early
- Anyone weighing replacement cushions against cleaning the set they have
Pricing
What it costs
Quoted based on your space, condition, and scope.
What moves the price
- Number and size of cushions, including back cushions and bolsters
- Severity of mildew or oil loading
- Fabric type and whether covers are removable
- Whether we can dry on site or need to stage cushions in the sun
San Diego conditions
San Diego conditions that ruin outdoor cushions
Our climate is unusually hard on cushions because it is warm enough to use them nearly every day and damp enough overnight that they rarely dry fully. That combination — heavy use plus persistent moisture — is exactly what mildew needs.
What we see locally
- Marine layer moisture reabsorbs into cores that were never dried after the last rain
- Chlorine and salt-water pool splash breaks down fiber and leaves crystalline residue that feels gritty
- High UV fades solution-dyed acrylic slowly and non-solution-dyed fabric quickly
- Cushions stored in a deck box while still damp are the most common source of the musty smell clients describe
Maintenance
Keeping cushions fresh between deep cleans
Cushion life is mostly determined by drying habits, not by how often you scrub them.
Stand them on edge after rain
Leaning cushions upright lets water drain out of the core rather than pooling in the bottom seam.
Never store damp
A deck box is a humidity chamber. Give cushions a full sunny day before they go away for the season.
Blot spills immediately
Wine, sunscreen, and food oils are simple to remove within an hour and stubborn after a week.
Rotate and flip monthly
Even wear keeps the fade uniform and stops one seating position from carrying all the body-oil load.
Re-treat after cleaning
A fabric protector reapplied after extraction restores the water and stain repellency that washing removes.
